Using DNS Blacklists
How do DNS blacklists work?
-
DNS blacklists are used to look-up information about the source of each incoming email. The idea is that if a particular machine is known for sending spam this will be reported by other users, and this will be stored in a list.
When an incoming email is received by our server it is tested against any blacklists that you've configured, that way if the source of the mail has been reported as being one known to send spam you can choose to reject it.
There are three types of rejection you might choose from:
- Rejected for delivery, and saved in your domain quarantine area.
- Delivered to you with a subject prefix added.
- Delivered to you with a special header added.
If the mail sender doesn't match against any of the lists you've defined then it is delivered as normal.
How do I enable DNS blacklists?
-
You may enable the use of DNS blacklists via your Domain-Management page, linked to upon your domain list. Simply enter the list which you'd like to be used to test incoming mails, and the action that you'd like to be taken on a match.
Which lists are worth using?
There are many DNS-blacklists available which you can find online. We recommend the use of the spamhaus list. You may add that by updating the list area to contain the following entry:
