Quick Start Guide
Prerequisites for using our service
To be suitable for our service you should currently have control over your own mailserver(s), and have control over your DNS records.
This means that if you're currently using a webmail service such as Googlemail, Hotmail, or Yahoo you cannot use our service.
How our service works
If you currently host your own mailserver(s) then you will already know how they work - when a mail is sent to an address at your domain the following things happen:
- 1. The sender's mailserver will lookup the MX record in DNS for your domain.
- This will tell the server where the mail should be delivered.
- 2. The mailserver connects to yours, and send the mail.
We offer our server as a proxy for yours. This means that the incoming mail is no longer sent directly to your mailserver(s), instead it is sent to ours. We will filter, process, and otherwise manage the incoming mail.
All mail which passes the checks that you've defined will then be forwarded to your real mailserver, and all failing mail will be rejected.
(The rejected mail is safely archived away in case there are errors, or if you wish to inspect it to see how much mail we've saved you from reading!)
Setting Up Your Domains
To start using our service then you must do two things:
- 1. Create Your Account
To get started create yourself an account, and then add your domain(s) to it.
This will ensure that we're ready to process mail upon your behalf.
- 2. Update Your MX Record(s)
Once you've added the domain(s) to your account you must then update your MX records in DNS and set them to be the following names:
incoming.mail-scanning.com
backup.mail-scanning.com.
